Computer science for everyday life

Research and teaching in the field of computer science are the core activities of the Institute for Computer Science.

Computer Science is regarded as an interdisciplinary interface between information science and other scientific disciplines, particularly technology and the natural sciences. The key  areas of research are Vehicle Information Technology and Cognitive System Technology.

The overall aim of Cognitive System Technology is the implementation of intelligent systems in private households and industrial automation (e.g. for inspection tasks or quality assurance) that are able to react independently to interaction partners while processing varying ambient conditions in a targeted manner.

The institute’s second key research area is Vehicle Information Technology. In addition to exploring the use of sensors and actuators in motor vehicles and vehicular data processing, various projects centre on research activities in the area of intelligent assistance systems.

The institute currently has research collaborations/contacts with the Technical University of Ilmenau, the Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Bielefeld, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, the Fraunhofer Institute IPA, and various companies in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT), safety engineering and household appliances, as well as automotive manufacturers, the automotive supply industry and several start-ups in the areas of ICT and small device construction.
