The HRW offers its students well-equipped laboratories and workshops.

Focus on Biomedical Technology

Career description

Graduates are offered a wide range of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with medical professionals, physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists. Occupational areas include the manufacture of medical-technical products, biomedical research, enterprises with large medical devices and testing and acceptance inspections pursuant to the Medical Devices Act.

Main topics of Biomedical Technology

Biomedical technology is a multidisciplinary specialist technology that combines the various disciplines of medicine, natural sciences and engineering sciences. Hochschule Ruhr West - University of Applied Sciences focuses on the application of electrical engineering in the medical field. The curriculum for this aspect of Electrical Engineering includes:

  • Imaging techniques (incl. MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound, X-ray)
  • Compilation and processing of bioelectric signals (incl. ECG and EEG)
  • Bioimpedance spectroscopy (incl. blood glucose measurement, body fat monitors)
  • Measuring physical, electric, biological and chemical quantities (incl. permittivity and conductivity)
  • Medical measuring and equipment technology (incl. blood pressure measurement, infusion technology)
  • Basics of human biology (incl. anatomy and physiology)
  • Signal processor technology
  • Control and feedback control systems
  • Digital technology
  • Programming

Research and development projects in these areas are conducted in close cooperation between Hochschule Ruhr West - University of Applied Sciences and local industries. After completing the second semester, students are given the opportunity of collaborating on these projects.

Areas of use

  • MRI scanners
  • CT scanners
  • Ultrasound diagnostics
  • EEG, ECG, EMG
  • Positron emission tomography
