Civil Engineering and Management

CIVIL ENGINEERING MEETS BUSINESS

Planning and constructing industrial facilities, office suites, apartments, bridges, tunnels or cooling towers requires the expertise of engineers. On the other hand, persons involved in such projects also have to keep an eye on the budget, think of the follow-up costs and renegotiate contracts, if necessary. This is exactly when specialists with skills in both disciplines, civil engineering and management, are needed.

The undergraduate programme in Civil Engineering and Management at Ruhr West combines a basic education in civil engineering with practice-oriented business administration tools. Typical characteristics of the construction industry, such as changes to the development of costs or to the primary time planning, are stressed and analysed.

The curriculum contains basic subjects of the civil engineering programme, such as the design, construction and maintenance of sustainable infrastructures. These are enriched by courses on how to manage and control financial resources, enabling students to make and defend decisions based on future predictions. Project work and case studies provide a strong practical orientation. Furthermore, technical English and presentation and negotiation techniques are implemented in the curriculum.
