Bottrop / Mülheim an der Ruhr, February 1, 2023: According to a current assessment, the Ruhr West University (HRW) has become the target of a cyber attack. For security reasons, after initial suspicion, the systems were briefly and completely disconnected from the network on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Most of the university's services (such as e-mail or Moodle) are currently unavailable. The IT colleagues are currently analyzing the risk and the possible damage with an external IT security consultancy. The investigating authorities are involved and informed. In order not to endanger the further investigations, we can only provide limited information.

The crisis management team, which was quickly deployed, is working to keep HRW students and employees able to work. Communication is via the HRW website: www.hochschule-ruhr-west.de

The commitment of the colleagues in the service and in the departments of the HRW is high, e.g. to inform all HRW members.

The topic of IT security for universities and public institutions has become increasingly important in recent months. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia made funds available.

The colleges and universities are also providing support with their experience and services to overcome this crisis at HRW.
