Institute of Natural Sciences

The main responsibility of the Institute of Natural Sciences is to carry out applied research and to offer courses in mathematics and physics, for example. The Institute is an important point of connection between the various engineering disciplines, such as electrical, mechanical and computer engineering, all of which are based on applied natural science. That is why the research performed at the Institute is marked by practical applications in the field of engineering.

The Institute’s core strengths in physics include optoelectronics, synthetic actuation and micro systems technology. In mathematics, the focus is on modelling and computer simulation.

This diversity of competences and their connections to the various engineering disciplines enables development projects in modern high technologies as well as a wide range of opportunities for collaborating with industry and university partners.

The Institute’s connections within the university become evident in broad-based synergies with the other institutes at Ruhr West. Points of connection exist primarily with the Institute of Measuring and Sensor Technology but also with the other institutes in Mülheim and Bottrop. Likewise, there is a growing network of industry partners, including Siemens AG in Mülheim, for example.
