E-Commerce

Who is buying online?

Online sales are growing rapidly, as more and more people buy via mobile apps, social media channels or even YouTube. Online communication, payment, sales, marketing and design are all important components of e-commerce. But what is behind an online store? What are the products and services that are being sold? Who is buying, who is selling? And how do online transactions work? This new degree programme is one of only a handful, especially in West Germany, to explicitly prepare students for careers in e-commerce.

In the undergraduate programme in E-Commerce at Ruhr West, students engage with all the important aspects of digital purchasing, thereby becoming experts in e-commerce – a field of study that combines business administration (controlling, logistics, finance) and (social media) marketing with computer science and web-based technologies. The computer science modules are devoted to software development, coding and quality assurance, new database and web technologies, mobile applications, store and backend systems and human-machine interaction. The business modules provide basic knowledge in business administration, especially in controlling, investment and costing, logistics and supply chain management. In the retail management module, students gain knowledge about the business models of stationary and online retail. The specifics of e-commerce are covered in the third module, which combines computer science, online marketing, retail management and social media.

Excellent career prospects

With online sales expected to grow exponentially in the years ahead, e-commerce businesses urgently need specialists. This means that graduates of this programme enjoy excellent career prospects. With their basic understanding of IT in e-commerce and online retail, as well as their expertise in online marketing, social media and Internet sales, they are generalists who can serve as links between a company’s IT and online sales/marketing departments. They know how to create e-commerce platforms and how to choose or improve system components for them. They work as web developers and web analysts, as online product managers or as process/ project managers, or in multi-channel marketing.
