Energy Systems Engineering and Management

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Developing and operating sustainable energy systems is one of today’s biggest challenges. Renewable energies alone, however, will not be sufficient to satisfy the huge demand for energy. Coal and gas will remain part of the mix. The programme in energy systems engineering and management explores the full range of energy sources, from power plants and solar technology to pellet stoves and smart building control systems.

In the undergraduate programme in Energy Systems Engineering and Management at Ruhr West, students acquire specialised knowledge about energy engineering and the energy industry. Business administration and law are also integral parts of the curriculum, which consists of coursework in engineering (55%), management (25%), law (10%) and other subjects (10%). At the end of their studies, students are able to contrast technical aspects with business and legal aspects to arrive at an independent assessment. This means that graduates are prepared to meet the challenges of innovative energy technologies and the expectations of energy providers.

Emphasis on practice and application

Doing a degree in engineering is always a challenge; successful students need to be strong logical thinkers with a passion for mathematics and physics. At Ruhr West, however, the curriculum has a strong emphasis on application, meaning students quickly get to use their classroom learning in real-world contexts – for instance, in projects resulting from contacts with firms using a particular technology. Moreover, engineering students at Ruhr West do not only attend lectures and seminars, they often go out to visit companies to meet potential employers and sometimes gain initial work experience as student workers. Likewise, instructors share their real-world knowledge about conventional and renewable energy sources and introduce their students to smart systems of energy distribution and energy usage while also teaching key skills such as technical English and presentation techniques.
