Automotive Electronics and Electric Mobility

Starting in the 2017-18 winter semester!

Mobility concerns us all. Whatever our destination, we want to get there quickly, flexibly, and most of all, safely. But as traffic in the cities keeps increasing, we need more electrically powered vehicles, which produce zero emissions and much less noise than conventional ones. Likewise, intelligent sensor systems are becoming more important: they help us to identify risks early on and to avoid accidents. That is why the innovation of future generations of vehicles will be determined by the development of electronic systems.

In the practice-oriented undergraduate programme in Automotive Electronics and Electric Mobility at Ruhr West, students learn to develop electronic systems for vehicles. They explore innovative topics such as alternative drive technologies, lithium batteries or fuel cells, power electronics, intelligent sensors, and communication systems. Aside from gaining basic knowledge in mathematics and the sciences (e.g. in physics, computer science, materials, electrical engineering), students also acquire team work skills, project management skills, and problem-solving skills. As a major hands-on component, the programme features three project modules in which teams of students work on real-world tasks. Hands-on learning starts right in the first semester with a set of exciting tasks that can be solved without theoretical knowledge. All project work is done in the state-of-the-art laboratories on our Mülheim campus.

Excellent career prospects

In the second half of the programme, students study applied topics such as electric drive technology, battery technology, vehicle technology or automotive electronics. Starting in the fifth semester, they can choose among three elective modules to specialise in driver assistance systems, connectivity, network infrastructure, vehicle bus systems and other topics. With about one-third of all German automotive suppliers based in North Rhine-Westphalia, graduates of this programme enjoy excellent career opportunities. The practice-oriented and interdisciplinary nature of the programme provides an outstanding preparation for work in hardware research and development or as test engineers, project managers, quality managers, sales managers or technical managers.
